What a BCBA consultant does:
Assesses the child to identify individual needs and strengths using a variety of well –researched assessment tools. Selects and develops targets based on assessment
Before you begin your programme the consultant will carry out baseline assessments which can include:
VB-MAPP- Verbal Behaviour Milestones assessment and placement program
ABLLS-R – Assessment of basic language and learning skills –revised
PEAK – Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge
ESDM- Early Start Denver Model
IGLR- Inventory of Good Learner Repertoire
AFLS- Assessment of Functional Living Skills
EfL- Essentials for Living
The assessment will provide information about where your child is functioning compared to his/hers same age peers. The assessment results will highlight the barriers that have been preventing the child from learning new skills. The results will also help to select and develop highly-personalised targets for the child.
Provides training to tutors
One of the first things to consider before starting an ABA programme for your child is getting an ABA tutor. He/She may or may not have a lot of experience as further training will be provided.
The training will aim at ensuring the ABA therapist implements the intervention plan properly and she/he provides a good example for parents to imitate.
As a hands on consultant, Georgeta uses behaviour skills training ( BST) procedures to teach tutors to implement various strategies with the children. Behaviour skills training is an evidence based approach for training staff to implement behaviour change and related procedures (Parsons, Rollyson, &Reid, 2012).
